土地  Earth

土地 EARTH – 2015

I started the project EARTH in 2010, with the aim of writing the word EARTH, in large 3-dimensional letters, in any environment, such as natural, rural or urban, in the language of the country where my work is welcomed.
Each installation is site-specific, and is a reinterpretation  of environmental and social themes of the specific site, to focus and to remind us of the true and deep meaning of the word Earth, and our relationship with it. The word Earth is written by and on the soil and emerges from the Earth itself. This word gives us cause for concern, writes a message, sends an SOS for the well-being of the earth, causing us to reflect.

I wrote the word EARTH in large letters in chinese caracters (土地 ) with 440 recycled sacks, filled with oyster shells coming from the neighbouring fish farmers. The sandbags have soil, and local salt-resistent plants growing on top. The focus is on the fragility of the Earth, taking in to account the problems of the local area: flooding, rising sea level, salinization of the soil with disastrous consequences for the environment and the people. The installation must withstand typhoons for a year.
